Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton wants final third improvements

Ahead of Nottingham Forest’s midweek clash with Luton Town, manager Chris Hughton has admitted he wants better from the club’s attacking unit.

The Reds are on a run of two defeats in 15 league games, with Hughton really starting to leave his mark on some parts of the pitch.

However, while Forest are creating chances, their profligacy is hurting them.

The 1-0 defeat to Swansea City and the 1-1 draw with Derby County could easily have been Forest wins but for missed chances.

Being ruthlessly clinical is something that Hughton wants from his side, with attacking his main focus right now.

“That is still the area where I am trying to get the balances right,” Hughton said to the Forest club website.

“You can’t get everything right and the teams that have got most things right and have been consistent at it are the teams that are in the top few places in the league.

“Aspects of our game I am delighted with, we are more competitive in games and I think we can give most teams a game now.

“I think we can still be better in the final third to put ourselves in better positions to win games.”

In that 15 game run, Forest have scored 17 goals, but when you consider six came in two games, it does highlight the inconsistency.

Hughton’s successful Championship teams in the past have scored goals – and lots of them.

His title winning Newcastle United side scored 90 and his Birmingham City side scored 78 as they came fourth.

Meanwhile, his Brighton & Hove Albion side scored 72 as they finished third in 2015/16 and then 74 as they came second the year after.

For context, the last time Forest got above 70 (71) was in 2014/15 and the last time they scored more than 80 (82) was the 2002/03 season.
