Forest defender Scott McKenna unsure about Scotland duty after injury

Nottingham Forest centre back Scott McKenna isn’t confident that he will be involved in Scotland’s upcoming squad, given he’s just returned from injury.

McKenna returned to the Forest line-up in the 1-1 draw against Reading, making his first appearance since January 20.

The £3m signing from Aberdeen even took the armband in the absence of both Lewis Grabban and Joe Worrall from the starting line-up, such is his regard within the Forest camp.

However, while McKenna was ecstatic to be out on a pitch again, he isn’t sure he’ll be in the next Scotland squad – though he is hoping he will be in the team for the Euros after a ‘frustrating’ time with Forest in which he has missed too many games.

“I am delighted to be back out there,” McKenna said to the Daily Mirror.

“I’ve picked up a couple of injuries this season and missed far more games than I would have liked. It is very frustrating.

“I’ve only played four games since the start of December, so whether I make the squad this month, I am not so sure.

“But certainly for the Euros, if I can stay fit for the rest of the season and just play as well as I can, hopefully I will give Steve Clarke a problem or a decision over whether he puts me in that squad.”

Even despite his injury problems, McKenna has quickly established himself as a key player for Forest since his summer move from Aberdeen.

The 24-year-old has played in 15 Championship matches for the Reds, scoring one goal, while the fact he is a left footed centre back offers Forest more possibilities when playing out from the back.

McKenna has made 16 Scotland appearances since his debut in 2018, the most recent of which was the 1-0 defeat to Israel in the UEFA Nations League.

Does it benefit Nottingham Forest if Scott McKenna stays with the club this international break?
