Dwight Gayle is a player who seemingly gets linked with Nottingham Forest during every transfer window.

Since he left West Brom at the end of the 2018/19 campaign, Forest have frequently been linked with a move for the striker.

The Reds have never managed to lure the player to the City Ground and the prospects of him signing now look bleak once again.

That’s because Newcastle look set to hand the player a new three-year contract at St James’ Park.

According to The Times, the 31-year-old is set to be offered an extension, with his current deal due to expire in the summer.

The move does seem somewhat surprising though. Gayle has played just 17 times in all competitions this season, scoring once.

Newcastle are set to send Andy Carroll on their way but his fellow striker is likely to earn a stay of execution.

Forest are likely to try and sign a striker during the summer. As a result, it seems only natural that the links to Gayle would start up again.

Being linked with a striker of his ilk isn’t really a problem and it’s fair to say he’d have been a good signing once upon a time.

His record of 59 goals in 100 Championship appearances makes him a quality striker at second-tier level.

Is this a blow for Forest?

Not really. Although the Reds will go in search of a striker this month, it’s unlikely they’ll sign one who is over 30.

Lewis Grabban and Lyle Taylor are both in their thirties and any new striker is likely to be a younger player with scope for him to develop.

It’s interesting that Newcastle are set to offer Gayle an extension. Offering him a three-year deal when he’s hardly played this season might seem like an aberration to Magpies supporters.

Hopefully Forest can prove this summer that lessons have been learned from previous transfer windows.

With that in mind, Newcastle handing Gayle a new contract and taking him off the table for Forest looks like a good thing at this stage.
