Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton says he hasn’t been surprised with the progress made by Nottingham Forest talent Brennan Johnson during his season-long loan spell.
Appleton has been speaking to Nottinghamshire Live ahead of his team’s play-off tie with Sunderland.
The Imps put themselves in a strong position to win automatic promotion but ultimately fell away in the final third of the campaign.
Johnson has been instrumental for the club and Appleton, a good friend of Johnson’s dad, David, says he’s been impressed with the youngster.
He told Nottinghamshire Live: “I’ve not been surprised. I knew about his ability and I spoke to his dad numerous times.
“I was delighted when we got the opportunity to sign him. He’s fulfilled the potential that we knew he had.
“To get to the next step, he just needs to play. As far as I’m concerned he can go and comfortably play at Championship level/
“At the end of the day, Chris Hughton is a fantastic manager. He’s very experienced and I’m sure Brennan will go back into the squad and play a major part for Forest next season.”
Does Johnson deserve a City Ground chance?
Absolutely. After showing amazing form for the Imps during 2020/21, the excitement is building from Forest fans who are desperate to see him in action.
Johnson has scored 12 times and claimed 13 assists during the campaign. If Forest were linked with a player who wasn’t owned by them with those stats, people would be buzzing.
The fact that it’s one of their own with such an impressive stats sheet makes it even more intriguing.
Johnson can play out wide, or through the middle as a No.10. That versatility could be key next season and Hughton simply has to give him a prolonged chance.
