The Manchester Evening News are claiming that James Garner could stay at Manchester United next season – much to the dismay of Nottingham Forest supporters.
The 20-year-old is wanted back at the City Ground for next season. He made 20 appearances for the Reds, scoring four goals during the second half of the campaign.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering bringing him into the United squad following his successful loan stint on Trentside.
The report claims that the key will be whether or not the Red Devils can sign their own targets before the season commences.
It is also claimed that a Premier League loan might be sourced, although that will depend on whether interest is forthcoming.
Right now though, it seems as though Forest will have to play a waiting game over Garner and that could prove risky.
Forest can’t afford to go into the new season without signing a midfielder.
Ryan Yates and Cafu are the only two senior midfielders in Chris Hughton’s ranks, with Jack Colback and Harry Arter seemingly out of favour.
Forest endured some desperately poor performances last season and a strong midfield is imperative ahead of 2021/22.
Should Forest turn their attentions elsewhere?
Not necessarily but they shouldn’t put all their focus on ensuring Garner comes back to Forest next season.
The decision is out of their hands and although United will be delighted with how Garner performed for the club, they must now do what’s best for them.
If the youngster stars in pre-season then he could find himself propelled into the first-team spotlight at United.
Forest will hopefully have an extensive list of targets to potentially bolster the midfield ranks and they must work in smart fashion.
Having Garner back could prove to be a game-changing signing but right now it’s United who hold the aces.
Supporters will be hoping and praying that Solskjaer lands a world-class midfielder when the window reopens.
