AFC Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott was linked with a move to Nottingham Forest during January and he’s now available on a free transfer.
The talisman has walked away from the League One outfit at the end of his contract and will now seek a fresh challenge.
Pigott was wanted by a number of clubs during January. Both Forest and Derby were linked by The Mirror during the mid-season window.
He stayed put then but he will now seek a new club before the 2021/22 campaign.
The 27-year-old enjoyed is on the back of season to remember. He bagged 22 goals and claimed five assists as Mark Robinson’s team avoided relegation.
Chris Hughton will undoubtedly go after a striker this summer, with Forest the second-lowest scorers in the Championship during 2020/21.
Pigott could remain a target and as a free agent, why not?
Both Lewis Grabban and Lyle Taylor are in their thirties and a younger striker will be sought.
Given his age, Pigott should be in his prime and after the current campaign, his confidence should be sky-high.
Forest need a striker to come in and hit the ground running and Hughton must decide whether Pigott is that man.
Could Pigott star at Nottingham Forest?
He certainly has the ability to score goals at Championship level, although his signing would represent a risk.
During his career to date he has played just 12 times in the second-tier, without scoring a single goal.
Right now though he has momentum and strikers thrive on having that element in their game.
Pigott captained Wimbledon for large parts of the 2020/21 campaign and he was lethal in front of goal.
Forest fans might prefer a younger striker coming into the fold but on a free, Pigott could come under consideration too.
There’s no reason why Hughton should stop at one striker and it’ll be interesting to see if the ex-Wimbledon man is in Forest’s sights.
