Nottingham Forest tried to sign Sergio Oliveira on loan in January 2020 and the Porto maestro now looks set for a big move.
According to Football Italia, the central midfielder is edging closer to a move to Serie A outfit Fiorentina.
It represents a remarkable transformation for the player who was out of the Porto picture when Forest wanted him.
He enjoyed a season to remember during 2020/21. Oliveira bagged 20 goals and claimed seven assists from 48 outings in all competitions.
Perhaps more impressive was his performances in the Champions League.
The 29-year-old scored both goals during a 3-2 defeat to Juventus, sending his team through on away goals.
Porto eventually crashed out to eventual winners Chelsea in the quarter-final, although Oliveira was named in the UEFA Squad of the Season.
It’s crazy to think that he was linked with a move to Forest. At that time Oliveira was facing a fight for his Porto future.
An injury had pushed the 10-cap Portugal international down the pecking order.
It was thought that a move to Forest would help him over his fitness issues and get him playing again.
A move never transpired though. Staying at Porto proved fruitful, with his form this season looking like earning him a move.
Oliveira to Forest proves one that got away
Funnily enough had the Reds signed him some fans would have been up in arms.
European recruits aren’t typically met with glee and given his form at the time, Oliveira wouldn’t have proved different.
The midfielder now looks like one that escaped Forest. At 29 he is in his prime and he could thrive in Italy.
He is comfortable on the ball and dictates games from the middle of the park.
Forest struggled in the engine room last season and how they could have done with a player like Oliveira.
