Back in August 2020, Nottingham Forest were linked with a move to sign Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy on a season-loan loan.

Football Insider claimed interest from a whole host of Championship clubs – including Forest.

The Reds didn’t manage to do a deal and the player enjoyed a decent campaign at St James’ Park.

Fast forward a season and the player who cost Newcastle £12 million is attracting a different level of interest.

According to The Sun, Galatasaray are now keen to sign the 26-year-old, with Leeds, Burnley, Southampton and Watford all keen.

It is also thought that top European clubs Bayer Leverkusen and Porto are monitoring his situation.

During 2020/21 he made 31 appearances, scoring three goals and claiming four assists as Newcastle finished the season with a flourish.

Murphy has just 12 months left on his current contract and with that in mind, Newcastle are playing a risky game.

Indeed, it looks as though Forest possibly missed a trick by not trying harder to sign Murphy.

The Reds could have been powerless in their attempts, however, and perhaps it was Newcastle who chose not to offload him last summer.

Murphy filled in a right-back for some of the 2020/21 campaign and has now added an element of versatility into his game.

Has the ship sailed for Forest and Murphy?

It has to be said that given the level of interest in the player, the Reds are now out of the race.

Forest will be forced into a different market this summer, with Murphy way out of their reach.

Despite that, Chris Hughton would be wise to pursue the Premier League loan market as a viable strategy.

Money could be tight across the Championship this summer and Forest must get their business right.

There is some real value in utilising the loan market as Hughton discovered last season with the signing of James Garner.

Murphy might prove to be one that got away and Forest can’t make the same mistakes this summer.
