Joao Carvalho will not return to Almeria next season and will head back to Nottingham Forest for pre-season training.

According to Radio Marca Almeria, the Segunda Division side have opted against a permanent signing.

The 24-year-old will head back to Trentside where boss Chris Hughton could assess him ahead of next season.

Carvalho was loaned out at the start of the 2020/21 campaign. Almeria chose to take him but the move hasn’t quite worked out.

He failed to score during 36 outings and registered just three assists.

No player divides opinion among the Forest fan base quite like the club’s £13.2 million record signing.

He’s been majestic at times in a Forest shirt, although it’s fair to say he’s often struggled for consistency.

In 67 games for the Reds he’s scored six goals and claimed nine assists.

Under Aitor Karanka he played frequently and looked to be adapting well to English football.

Martin O’Neill came in and didn’t really fancy him, whilst he struggled to slot into Sabri Lamouchi’s more pragmatic approach.

On his day, Carvalho can light up the Championship and some supporters will hope he gets a chance next season.

Carvalho could provide Forest boost to Hughton

The Reds boss has spoken before about wanting to add more attacking quality to his ranks.

Brennan Johnson will return to the club next season and deserves a chance after his loan spell.

Although Carvalho’s hasn’t been anywhere near as fruitful, that doesn’t mean he should be completely disregarded.

Hughton might welcome another attacking option into his squad with open arms ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

His fiercest critics come from those who use the transfer fee as a stick to beat him with.

It’s important to remember that Carvalho didn’t choose that fee and a young player, he’s still learning his trade.

The hope for some supporters will be that he’s back in Forest contention next season.
