Middlesbrough are set to beat Birmingham City to the signing of Nottingham Forest winger Sammy Ameobi, according to Football League World.

Neil Warnock looks set to win the race, with the player’s Reds deal set to expire this week. He has been at the City Ground for two years.

Ameobi was described by Chris Hughton as a player with ‘real ability‘ during his time at the club. As a result, it’s perhaps a shock that a new deal wasn’t forthcoming.

Joining Middlesbrough will mean a second spell at the Riverside Stadium for the 29-year-old. He scored once and claimed one assist during nine games on loan earlier in his career.

Linking up with Warnock has clearly appealed to the soon to be departed Forest man. He will feel he has plenty to offer after his two seasons at the City Ground.

Ameobi proved a frustrating player for the Reds. During 2019/20 he scored five goals and claimed nine assists.

Last season he struggled to replicate that form though. He found the net three times and claimed just two assists as the Reds struggled.

In total, Ameobi played 81 times for the club and on the whole, he did a decent job after signing on a free transfer.

Consistency robbed Ameobi of Forest extension

It will be interesting to see what length of contract the player gets at Middlesbrough. Perhaps, he craves a longer contract and Forest weren’t willing to accommodate.

Although he did a decent job, it’s easy to see why Ameobi hasn’t earned a longer Forest stay.

He was hardly the most consistent performer and keeping him would have blocked the progress of the club’s younger players.

Alex Mighten didn’t start too many games last season, whilst Brennan Johnson excelled out wide during his loan spell with Lincoln.

Forest fans will wish Ameobi well and it’ll now be intriguing to see how he gets on at Middlesbrough next season.
