Middlesbrough have beaten Birmingham City to the signing of Nottingham Forest winger Sammy Ameobi.

Neil Warnock has won the race, with the forward seeing his contract expire at the City Ground after two years at the club.

Ameobi was described by Chris Hughton as a player with ‘real ability‘ during his time at the club. As a result, it’s perhaps a shock that a new deal wasn’t forthcoming.

Joining Middlesbrough means a second spell at the Riverside Stadium for the 29-year-old. He scored once and claimed one assist during nine games on loan earlier in his career.

Linking up with Warnock has clearly appealed to the former Forest man. He will feel he has plenty to offer after his time at the City Ground.

Ameobi proved a frustrating player for the Reds. During 2019/20 he scored five goals and claimed nine assists.

Last season he struggled to replicate that form though. He found the net three times and claimed just two assists as the Reds struggled.

In total, Ameobi played 81 times for the club and on the whole, he did a decent job after signing on a free transfer.

Forest fans wish Ameobi well

Although he was inconsistent, the Reds supporters have pulled together to wish the 29-year-old well in his next chapter.

Ameobi always gave his all and during the 2019/20 campaign he scored some really big goals for the club.

Putting in maximum effort is something Forest fans love to see from their players and they thank Ameobi for doing that.

Following the confirmation that he’d signed for Boro, supporters took to Twitter to thank the big man for his efforts at Forest.

Here is what they had to say as Warnock finally landed his man on a free transfer.
