George Shelvey recently departed Nottingham Forest to join Mansfield Town on a season-long loan. After heading to One Call Stadium, Brennan Johnson and Tyrese Fornah have reacted on his Instagram post.
The 20-year-old has been on the books at Forest for several years. He has come through the youth ranks and has recently trained with the first team.
With Brice Samba and Jordan Smith ahead of him though, a loan move looks wise. During the 2019/20 campaign, he did make the bench for an FA Cup clash at Chelsea.
Now, he will look to head to Mansfield and get some minutes under his belt during the 2021/22 campaign.
What have Johnson and Fornah said about Shelvey leaving Forest?
Both of the Reds’ talented youngsters have experienced loan spells themselves. As a result, they will understand the true value of playing regular first-team football.
Johnson (Lincoln) and Fornah (Plymouth) both enjoyed solid campaigns during 2020/21. The young duo played plenty of football and return to the City Ground ready to compete for a place in the first team.
Now Shelvey will hope to do the same. He is very much a modern-day goalkeeper. The 20-year-old is comfortable with his feet, commands his area well and commands his area exceptionally well.
Smith is out of contract in 12 months time and could depart. If he does, Shelvey could step up as Samba’s understudy following a strong loan spell at Mansfield.
The Forest man will have to work hard for a place. The Stags have also added young Manchester United stopper Nathan Bishop to their ranks. He will now compete with Shelvey for a place in Nigel Clough’s team.
Fighting for three points and the chance to play regularly against men could really enhance Shelvey’s development though. His first Football League loan has the potential to really bring out the best of him.
