Manchester United defeated Derby County 2-1 at Pride Park this afternoon and for Nottingham Forest fans it was a chance to run the rule over James Garner.

The Reds are interested in taking the United maestro on loan again for the 2021/22 campaign. His first pre-season outing for the Red Devils, however, highlighted just how capable he is.

Garner played 20 times for Forest during last season. He arrived in January having fallen down the pecking order during a loan spell with Watford.

He proved an instant hit at the City Ground, netting four goals including one against the Rams at Pride Park.

Garner’s future is now open for discussion. Some United fans think he will get the nod to feature this season, whilst others think a loan spell would help him once again.

Forest fans will be desperately hoping United sent him to the City Ground. It does seem a long shot, with the club likely keen to get him regular football in the Premier League.

United were happy with his progress at Forest though. As a result, there perhaps is a slim chance of the Reds seeing Garner return to the club.

United fans buzzing with Forest target Garner

It may have been the first game of pre-season but fans of the Red Devils enjoyed Garner’s display. He played the first 45 minutes on a baking hot day in the East Midlands.

Plenty think he is a future star and can’t wait to see more of him during the pre-season campaign. What happens after that period remains to be seen.

This afternoon’s game probably won’t have told too many Forest fans anything they didn’t already know.

Garner was comfortable in possession, worked hard and played a couple of pin-point passes that he’d been accustomed to at Forest.

Reds supporters might be interested to know that United fans were quick to rave about Garner’s performance in the East Midlands.
