The name Rafa Mir is enough to send shivers down the spines of Nottingham Forest supporters. Thanks to his heroics yesterday, Spain are now set for a medal match at the Olympics.

The former Reds loanee was inspirational as the Spanish outfit brushed aside Ivory Coast 5-2 in Tokyo.

Mir was truly woeful for Forest. Sabri Lamouchi added him to the ranks ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. He made 13 appearances for the Reds and although he failed to score, he did register two assists.

The Spaniard has kicked on since his City Ground departure though. He’s been bang in form for Huesca though and last season he found the net 16 times in La Liga.

Mir is still a Wolves player but it seems unlikely that he’ll be part of Bruno Lage’s plans for next season. With that in mind, a sale seems feasible before the transfer window closes.

Different option

Mir was added as a different option to Lewis Grabban but failed to make an impact at Forest.

He was largely used as a substitute but in one game he did start against Wigan he was absolutely out of his depth.

The 24-year-old missed several big chances and as Forest went down 1-0 he was the man who came in for criticism from the Reds faithful.

Now, Mir is on the cusp of Spanish history. Spain are guaranteed a shot at a medal of some sort.

They face Japan next and if they win they will embark on the gold medal match.

His hat-trick yesterday was sensational. Forest fans, however, are left wondering where that Mir was when he signed on loan at the City Ground.
