Fouad Bachirou might go down as one of the most bizarre signings in Nottingham Forest history. The man who constantly had a smile on his face departed yesterday, signing for Cypriot outfit Omonia Nicosia. Alex Mighten and Luke Freeman reacted on his Instagram.
The 31-year-old was signed by Sabri Lamouchi. Reports at the time claimed that it was the boss who wanted the Malmo player. He had identified him as a replacement for Ben Watson who departed for Charlton.
His time at Forest was a huge disappointment. He leaves having played just 167 minutes of action, with just 32 of those coming during the Championship campaign. The club has announced that his departure is on a free transfer.
Bachirou played in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley during the 2020/21 curtain-raiser. He injured his hamstring in that game and wasn’t seen again for that calendar year. He would make brief outings in games against Swansea and Barnsley again in January but that was his lot under Chris Hughton.
What have Mighten and Freeman said as Bachirou leaves Forest?
Freeman is now back at Sheffield United. There is a chance that he spent a lot of time in the treatment room with Bachirou during his time at Forest. By his own admission, the Sheffield United man didn’t cover himself in glory at the City Ground.
He has offered him a warm congratulatory message, whilst Mighten has wished him on his way with a good luck message as he embarks on an adventure in Cyprus.
Bachirou should thrive in his new habitat. He has experience of playing in Sweden with Malmo and Ostersunds and the Cypriot league should be very similar.
Forest have to make sure these kinds of deals now become a thing of the past. Of course, every signing has an element of risk but Bachirou checking in on Trentside looked bizarre from the off.
