Nottingham Forest were booed from the pitch as Blackburn Rovers ran out 2-1 winners at the City Ground. It was the third successive time this season that Forest have lost by such a scoreline. In Philip Zinckernagel, however, the Reds do have a shining light.
Patience is wearing thin. Chris Hughton was bombarded with chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’; whilst certain fans sang the name of former boss Sabri Lamouchi. Make no honest about it, this was a toxic night on Trentside.
Forest fell behind just after the break. Daniel Ayala heading home following some loose marking from Reds midfielder Ryan Yates. Ayala previously spent time on loan at Forest when Sean O’Driscoll was in charge of first-team affairs.
Zinckernagel rifled Forest level with just over 20 minutes remaining. Blackburn had stopped attacking and the Dane smashed a long-range effort into the net via the inside of the upright.
More calamity defending was on the way though. Brice Samba, who had enjoyed a good night, once threw points away. His clumsy attempt at an aerial ball, eventually allowed Darragh Lenihan to nod into an empty net. Blackburn fans were ecstatic, Forest fans launched into a crescendo of boos.
Zinckernagel provides shining Forest light
Amid the chaos, Forest have a player capable of brilliance. Indeed, if the Reds can start defending better, he is a match-winner in his own right and arguably too good to be playing for this current Forest team.
The 26-year-old has now scored and claimed three assists in his short time at the club. His first goal had proved timely last night, although once again it proved in vain.
Although disgruntled, Forest fans did find some time to praise the Reds forward. He cut a frustrated figure at the full-time whistle and appeared to be nursing some kind of injury.
Following his eye-catching performance against Blackburn, supporters took to Twitter and here is what they had to say about the tricky forward.
