Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Manchester United midfielder James Garner on a season-long loan. The Reds have announced the deal this morning, with the player penning a new deal at Old Trafford before joining.
Forest were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City yesterday. It was the fourth straight defeat for the Reds during 2021/22 and leaves Chris Hughton’s team rock-bottom of the Championship.
Garner has signed for three extra years at Manchester United. The club holds an option to add another year onto that, but his future lies on loan in the short term.
Forest have won the race to sign the midfielder ahead of Derby. The Rams reportedly did everything to try and sign Garner, with Wayne Rooney close to the midfielder’s representatives.
The 20-year-old was in fantastic form for the Reds during the second half of last season. He scored four goals from 20 appearances after spending the first half of the season on loan with Watford.
Now, he returns to the City Ground looking to help Forest away from the Championship relegation zone and off the foot of the league.
The Reds travel to Pride Park next Saturday, with Wolves due at the City Ground for a Carabao Cup clash on Tuesday night.
Can Garner revive Forest?
It’s fair to say that this is a great signing. Garner can’t do it all on his own though and Forest need to add more quality around the Manchester United starlet.
The squad is considerably weaker than last season and the challenge for the club is to ensure more players arrive at the football club.
Garner is a signing to shout about though. Other clubs were reportedly keen, with Rangers, Norwich and Sheffield United all thought to be keen on signing him this summer.
The youngster has chosen Forest though and this is an excellent addition to the City Ground ranks.
