Nottingham Forest retained the Brian Clough Trophy following a 1-1 draw against Derby County at Pride Park. Brennan Johnson cancelled out Tom Lawrence’s opener and the Reds collected their first point of the campaign. Afterwards, all the praise from the Forest faithful was directed towards Scott McKenna.
The Reds were once again disappointing in the first half. Lawrence fired the Rams into a deserved lead early doors, shortly after Lyle Taylor had missed a glorious chance for Forest.
Chris Hughton threw Alex Mighten on for Joao Carvalho at the interval and it appeared to give Forest a foothold. With eight minutes to go, the Reds got their just rewards when Johnson rifled a shot beyond Kelle Roos.
It was McKenna’s defending which drew praise though. The Scotland international will now link up with Steve Clarke’s team for the latest round of World Cup qualifiers.
The 24-year-old was partnered by a returning Joe Worrall and he looked in tremendous shape. During the second half, in particular, McKenna kicked or headed everything clear and he really stood up to be counted.
Forest signed McKenna from Aberdeen last summer. He did struggle with some injuries during 2020/21 but so far this season, he’s really stepped up a gear.
What have Forest fans said about McKenna?
Quite simply, he’s worshipped. On the banks of the River Trent, Forest fans adore the Scottish Adonis and who can fault them. The physical presence he displayed during the second half was a joy to behold and the scary thing is he could still improve.
Had McKenna been thrown a breeze block during the 90 minutes at Pride Park, it’s pretty certain that he’d have headed it away. He was tremendous throughout and would have been a good bet for Man of the Match.
Forest fans raved about his performance during the 90 minutes and afterwards, they took to Twitter. Here is what the fan base had to say about McKenna following his stunning display at Pride Park.
