Nottingham Forest signed Manchester United midfielder James Garner on loan during the summer and on Tuesday he made his England Under-21 debut. He played the full 90 minutes as the Three Lions beat Kosovo 2-0. Afterwards, Alex Mighten and Mason Greenwood reacted on Instagram.
Garner was mightily impressive for Forest last season. He signed in January after cutting short a spell with Watford. Garner showcased maturity in midfield and scored four goals from 20 outings for the Reds.
Chris Hughton fought tooth and nail to get him back to the City Ground for 2021/22. It proved a drawn-out process, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to run the rule over him in the first instance.
Garner eventually found his way back to Forest though and a big season lies ahead. The midfielder played his first league game back at the club in the 1-1 draw against Derby County last time out.
Now, he’s earning international recognition. The 20-year-old looks like becoming a future star. On Tuesday he played alongside Oliver Skipp from Tottenham and Crystal Palace player Conor Gallagher, never looking fazed throughout.
What have Mighten and Greenwood said about Forest loanee Garner?
The Manchester United man is clearly a popular figure in the Forest dressing room. Alex Mighten summed up his thoughts on Garner with a two-word assessment, whilst Tyrese Fornah also called him a big player.
Greenwood is already on the path towards stardom with Manchester United. He has found the net three times so far this season and looks like becoming a world-class talent.
He chose to sum up Garner’s England performance with just an emoji. Greenwood has come through the United ranks with Garner and clearly, the two have the respect of each other.
Garner will be back at Forest today ready to begin training once again. The Reds take on Cardiff City on Sunday looking for a first win of the season.
A timely moment of magic from the United man wouldn’t go amiss.
