Nottingham Forest are back in Championship action tonight, hosting Middlesbrough at the City Ground – but Sammy Ameobi will miss out on a return.
Forest lost 2-1 at home to Cardiff City on Sunday, leaving Chris Hughton clinging onto his job.
Tonight’s game with Middlesbrough is surely the last chance saloon for Hughton. He needs a result now, with Forest sitting bottom of the Championship table on just one point from six games.
Tonight’s game won’t be easy at all, but at least Hughton won’t have to fear being downed by Ameobi.
Ameobi’s history at Forest
Forest swooped to sign Ameobi in 2019. The winger had cancelled the final year of his Bolton Wanderers contract and wanted an immediate return to the Championship.
Forest duly obliged, signing Ameobi to a one-year deal.
After an impressive first season with five goals and eight assists, Ameobi surprised many at the City Ground and earned another year.
Ameobi dropped off a little last season, playing 13 fewer games. He also managed just three goals and two assists, with his numbers really dropping off.
Forest released Ameobi this summer, and he made the move up to Middlesbrough on a free transfer.
Warnock comments on Ameobi
Ameobi has yet to make a first league appearance for Boro due to injury.
Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has now indicated that Ameobi is nowhere near a return and won’t face Forest tonight.
Speaking to the Teesside Gazette, Warnock suggested that fluid on the knee is the big issue for Ameobi, and it will prevent a City Ground return.
“No, not at all, not at the moment,” said Warnock on Ameobi returning any time soon.
“He still has a lot of fluid coming off in his knee. It doesn’t look likely in the next few weeks, if I’m honest. He’s not training. I don’t think they can do much until this fluid stops. I don’t know the ins and outs, I just know he’s not training at the moment and his knee isn’t any better really.”
