European Cup-winning legend John McGovern has told TalkSPORT (Jim White Show: 21/09: 10/07) that he is convinced that Steve Cooper can get Nottingham Forest climbing the Championship table.

The former Swansea City manager has agreed to replace Chris Hughton who was sacked last Thursday after less than a year in charge.

Cooper has only spent two seasons managing in club football. He led Swansea to the play-offs in back-to-back seasons but left prior to the 2021/22 campaign.

The 44-year-old is set to take training for the first time this morning. His trusted lieutenants Alan Tate and Steve Rands will join him on Trentside.

Following the news that he’s accepted the job, John McGovern has been discussing the appointment.

He told TalkSPORT: “He’s got the experience of working in the league and he’s done reasonably well.

“You need wins instead of draws but I’m sure he’ll instil that little bit of confidence in the players to kick on.

“The thing you need to do is score goals and we’ve been a little bit short on that side. That will be the main priority.

“They’re ambitious, the owner has spent money but it’s not easy. The manager will bring an extra bit of energy and one thing they will have is the supporters behind them.”

Will Cooper get Forest firing?

It does look like a decent appointment and it’s certainly one that aligns with Dane Murphy and his way of believing how football should be played.

McGovern is spot on about the need for goals though. The very first remit for Cooper has to be finding a way for Forest to score more goals.

Only Derby and Southend scored fewer times than Forest during 2020/21 in the entire EFL and that simply won’t do.

Forest have plenty of attacking talents within their ranks and there really is no excuse for failing to score goals with this team.

Cooper needs to help the Reds discover the feel-good factor once more and given his previous work with younger players, this looks like a sound appointment.
