James McAtee made his Manchester City debut on Tuesday night but just weeks ago he was being linked with a loan move to Nottingham Forest.

The Reds were among a clutch of Championship outfits ready to try and take the City youngster on loan for the 2021/22 campaign.

Ultimately, Pep Guardiola made the decision not to loan him out, suggesting he might hand him chances throughout the season at the Etihad Stadium.

McAtee was introduced for the final 18 minutes on Tuesday. City comfortably got past Wycombe in the Carabao Cup, running out 6-1 winners.

McAtee has been a revelation so far during 2021/22. For the Under-23s he’s scored nine goals and claimed two assists in just five appearances.

He typically operates in the number 10 role, although he can play in central midfielder. With that in mind, it was a surprise on Tuesday when Guardiola chose to introduce him at left-back.

Nonetheless, the teenager did well and there is more to come from the youngster at senior level.

Forest wanted a new number 10 in the summer. Ultimately their efforts proved to no avail though and the club stuck with the current crop.

Braian Ojeda has arrived as a forward-thinking midfielder, although he typically operates in the engine room.

What did City fans say about Forest linked McAtee?

It would seem as though fans of the Premier League champions have high hopes for the talented teenager.

The 18-year-old does look set for a really bright future – although playing left-back doesn’t look like a likely outcome on a regular basis.

McAtee is far too talented to be playing in defence and his form for the under-23s makes it no surprise that Guardiola didn’t want to loan him out.

Following his debut, we looked at what Manchester City fans were saying about the player who was linked to Forest in the summer.
