Nottingham Forest defeated Barnsley 3-1 at Oakwell last night and a surprise package emerged for praise following the game.
Philip Zinckernagel, Brennan Johnson and Lewis Grabban ensured a big three points for Forest but it was a substitute who won over some of his critics.
Since signing permanently Jack Colback has struggled for consistency. He managed just 17 appearances last season and fell out of favour massively under Chris Hughton.
The midfielder did start the 2021/22 campaign in the side. He played the first three games but has been on the bench since then.
Last night, Steve Cooper decided to have a look at Colback for the first time. He threw the ex-Newcastle man into the fray for the final 19 minutes and he didn’t disappoint.
Some supporters had washed their hands of the midfielder. Plenty felt as though he was dusted as a player and have been critical ever since.
Last night, however, he went a long way towards curbing some of those fears. He was calm, composed and showed a nice touch when it came to moving the ball about.
It remains to be seen whether the 31-year-old can forge his way into Cooper’s plans more permanently but this will have given him some food for thought.
What have Forest fans said about Colback?
It seems as though the more level-headed supporters are willing to give credit where it’s due. Colback was fantastic when he came on last night and this performance will have given him confidence.
Cooper praised his midfielder afterwards and Colback even came close to adding a fourth goal for Forest.
That wasn’t to be with his effort saved by the Barnsley goalkeeper but he seemed to enjoy himself out there.
Forest beat off a host of other clubs to sign Colback and the maestro won’t be happy with how his time at the club has gone.
Last night was a step in the right direction. After the game, supporters took to Twitter and we had a look at what they had to say about Colback’s showing.
