Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper heaped praise on Lewis Grabban after the striker netted in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Birmingham City.

Grabban notched his fourth goal of the season with a stunning long-range effort which opened the scoring.

Plenty of supporters had written the talisman off. During 2020/21, Grabban managed just six goals in 29 appearances, struggling badly with injury problems.

It would seem as though Grabban is doing well to quash any fears of his ability, however. At 33, he’s still finding the way to goal and his strike at the weekend was a thing of beauty.

Cooper has quickly got his feet under the table at the City Ground. Forest have now claimed three wins and a draw since Chris Hughton departed.

Each of the three wins has come away from home and if Forest can sort their home form out, they could quickly climb the table.

After Saturday’s game, Cooper has raved about Grabban and he couldn’t be happier with the talisman.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: “He’s a really good player, he’s proven that. Lewis doesn’t need loads of information from me, he just needs a bit of support and a bit of belief, he’s done it for years.

“He led the line really well and scored a brilliant goal. On the pitch, he has a real presence and he’s being a real captain at the moment.

“We need to look after him. He’s over 30 now but he’s still in great shape.”

Integral: Grabban holds the key to Forest fortunes

Forest chose not to sign a striker in the summer, leaving Grabban and Lyle Taylor to share the responsibilities. With Taylor bang out of form, it’s massive that Grabban has kicked on.

With four goals already this season, the striker will hope to firmly continue silencing his critics.

Scoring goals is second nature to Grabban and he hasn’t become a bad player overnight. Some of the criticism last season was premature, with plenty feeling he was past it.

Now, Grabban is massive. An injury to the talisman could be seriously detrimental and Forest have to keep him fresh and firing during the current campaign.
