Nottingham Forest midfielder James Garner earned another start for the England under-21 outfit last night. The Manchester United loanee was replaced by Curtis Jones on 56 minutes during a 1-0 win over Andorra.
It was by no means a vintage display from the Three Lions. If anything, Emile Smith Rowe’s goal spared England’s blushes against their vastly inferior opposition.
For Garner, the key during this international break was to build his confidence up. Since returning to Forest for a second loan spell, he’s struggled to live up to the hype.
He was substituted against Barnsley during a 3-1 win and was then taken out of the starting eleven for the game against Birmingham. As a young player, however, the hope will be that it’s merely a blip.
Garner didn’t do too badly last night. Admittedly the opposition weren’t great and England were expected to win. The Forest midfielder did his job nicely though and played a decent part.
The performance will have delighted Forest fans. After missing the last game, supporters might have been anxious that Garner wouldn’t get a game under his belt.
Now, the challenge is to return to Forest and rediscover his form ahead of a busy run of fixtures throughout November and December.
What did Manchester United fans say about Forest loan star Garner?
Supporters of the Old Trafford-based club absolutely love Garner. It’s not unfair to say that and they genuinely believe he could be comfortably playing for United this season.
His form at Forest suggests that’s perhaps a bit too soon; although he does certainly look to have a bright future ahead of him.
Last night, the United faithful were glad to see him starring in the midfield for England under-21s and they took to Twitter to rave about his performance.
