Nottingham Forest academy director Gary Brazil believes the club let go of an elite player in Ben Brereton Diaz. The Forest employee made the comments ahead of a 2-1 win for the Reds over Blackpool.

Brereton Diaz, as he is now affectionately known, continues to star. Now a full Chile international, the 22-year-old scored twice for his adopted country during the last international break.

The former Forest striker has come of age during the 2021/22 campaign. He has already scored 10 goals for Blackburn from 13 appearances and that is more than he managed for the Reds in 57 outings.

Forest cashed in on Brereton Diaz during the summer of 2018. After an inconsistent period, the Reds decided that £7 million was a deal that the club couldn’t refuse.

Up until this season, it had looked as though Forest were laughing all the way to the bank. Prior to the current campaign, Brereton Diaz had scored nine goals in around 90 appearances for Rovers.

Admittedly, the fee received for Brereton Diaz did allow Forest to sign Lewis Grabban. He has really produced the good for the Reds and in that sense, it still looks like good business.

What has Brazil said about former Forest man Brereton Diaz?

It seems pretty clear that Brazil always fancied that Brereton Diaz would always kick on. It has taken some time but the youngster is now starting to realise his potential.

Clearly, choosing to play for Chile has done his confidence the world of good. Since making that decision he’s kicked on and is currently the Championship top goalscorer.

Forest can’t look back with too much worry though. He was very inconsistent for the club and for a large amount of time at Blackburn he has also been the same.

Now, it seems as though he will kick on but £7 million in 2018 still represents a decent piece of transfer business by Forest.
