Plenty of Forest fans were left scratching their heads when Rodrigo Ely was signed shortly after the transfer deadline on a free. An update from Steve Cooper will have those supporters even more perplexed right now.

The Brazilian defender checked in after leaving Alaves last season. A 27-year-old central defender, he was expected to provide some competition in the squad.

Since arriving, he’s been injured, however. Last week, Cooper suggested that he would play for the under-23s in last night’s game with West Brom. Yesterday, the head coach was forced to offer another update.

Quite simply, Ely is injured again. He was withdrawn from last night’s game and could now face another spell on the sidelines.

Cooper told Nottinghamshire Live: “Rodrigo has had another setback, unfortunately.

“He was due to play for the under-23s but he’s now available. He’s having a scan on a muscle injury, so we’ll find out how long he will be out.

“I wouldn’t say it’s serious, as in long-term. But he needs a scan on his quad.”

Ely only managed eight appearances during 2020/21. He ruptured his cruciate ligament and missed the remainder of the campaign.

Forest will hope that lightning isn’t striking twice at the City Ground.

Ely facing a fight to win Forest place

With Cooper choosing to play three central defenders and Loic Mbe Soh currently injured, this would have been a perfect time to have Ely on the bench in the matchday squad.

Injuries have struck though and Forest have been here before when it comes to overseas imports coming into the club.

Of course, the Reds have signed domestic players who have struggled with injuries, although it’s perhaps more frustrating when a player needs to adapt to a new country yet can’t lace his boots up because of injury.

Ely is yet to clear a ball in frustration in the Garibaldi and it would seem that he’s already facing a fight to make his mark on the Forest team.
