Nottingham Forest have a problem ahead of Tuesday night’s game against Luton Town and it involves Gaetan Bong.
Max Lowe hobbled out of the action against Reading yesterday and there is cause for concern.
Steve Cooper confirmed after the game that the on-loan wing-back is likely to be missing on Tuesday. It seems likely he will miss Friday’s trip to West Brom too.
Yesterday, Gaetan Bong was introduced and quite how he’s still getting minutes on the pitch remains a mystery.
The experienced performer was largely erratic during yesterday’s game and there was an obvious drop in confidence when he came on.
Forest can ill-afford any passengers and that should lead Cooper to a bold selection choice on Tuesday.
Yesterday, the head coach opted to utilise Jack Colback’s experience in midfield; opting to play Bong at left-back.
He did suggest that he considered putting the 32-year-old into defence and that is what he has to do on Tuesday.
With Ryan Yates missing, that will mean a completely different central midfield partnership – but it’s a risk they have to take.
The academy graduate will be suspended for the visit from Luton after collecting a fifth yellow card of the campaign.
That could open the door for a debut for Paraguayan Braian Ojeda and it could prove the perfect time to unleash him.
Forest persistence with Bong has to be over
Cooper won’t accept passengers in his team and with that in mind, he may have already seen enough of Bong.
With youngsters such as Jayden Richardson and Fin Back knocking on the door, there’s absolutely no need to be persisting with Bong.
Quite simply he has been a liability since day one on Trentside and looks way off the pace when he’s been called upon.
Colback looks like the obvious option to start on Tuesday night, with Garner and Ojeda pulling the strings in midfield.
Any solution that doesn’t involve Bong starting is likely to be a popular one with the Forest supporters.
