Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba has been named in the Championship Team of the Week.

He has been named alongside three former Forest players. Ben Brereton Diaz, Jamie Paterson and David McGoldrick have also been selected.

Samba was inspired as Forest drew 0-0 against Luton. He saved a second-half penalty and then produced a stunning save from Kal Naismith in stoppage time.

The 27-year-old has endured a rollercoaster of emotions this season.

He was error-prone in the opening stages of the campaign and Chris Hughton dropped him for his final game in charge.

He was reinstated for Steven Reid’s game in an interim capacity though and he’s not really looked back.

Samba kept his fourth clean sheet of the campaign on Tuesday and he’s thriving under Steve Cooper.

Some of the goalkeeper’s attributes have never been in doubt. His distribution is largely good; whilst he’s also a mean shot-stopper.

Occasionally he has proved slightly erratic though and particularly earlier in the season, he was costing Forest goals.

Samba signed for Forest for £1.8 million from Caen in 2019. He quickly ousted Aro Muric from the team and became the club’s number one.

Still, he fails to convince some supporters of his undoubted quality, although even his fiercest critics couldn’t begrudge him praise on Tuesday.

Selection: Samba thoroughly deserves praise after Forest masterclass

This was a remarkable showcase of top-class goalkeeping and he deservedly claimed the Man of the Match award against Luton.

Samba’s save from Elijah Adebayo’s penalty was brilliant and his injury-time save sublime.

The challenge for Samba now is ultimately to find some consistency with such a performance level – and there really isn’t an excuse.

The defence in front of him has been largely solid and for Samba that should make life a lot easier.
