Nottingham Forest are looking at a Premier League right-back as they prepare for the eventuality that Djed Spence might be recalled by Middlesbrough.
The Athletic’s Paul Taylor believes that the Reds are monitoring the progress of a player currently at a top-flight outfit.
Chris Wilder could recall Spence when the January window reopens. As a result, Forest are busy preparing themselves should the situation arise.
At the moment the Premier League right-back is unnamed and naturally, some speculation may start in the coming weeks.
Spence has been a revelation since checking in from Boro back during the summer transfer window.
He has made 14 appearances for Forest and supporters have been demanding that the club snap him up permanently.
That looks unlikely and with Wilder trying to assess his squad now he’s in place at the Riverside Stadium, Spence could be recalled.
Forest do have some options within their own ranks. Mohamed Drager is yet to feature for the Reds, whilst Fin Back is also a star of the future.
Both of those players probably fit the traditional role of full-back more than the right wing-back role that Cooper craves, however.
Who could the mystery right-back be that Forest are courting to replace Spence?
Connor Roberts at Burnley will surely be worthy of a mention. He signed for the Clarets in the summer but is yet to feature for the club in the Premier League.
He would perhaps be allowed to leave the club on loan for the second half of the campaign and Cooper worked with the Wales international at Swansea.
There are some other options that could be in the mix. A wildcard option could be Neco Williams at Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp could be willing to loan him out and signing the Reds youngster would certainly be a statement signing.
Of course, at this stage there are plenty of players who it could be and Forest fans will have to wait and see.
Plenty of Forest fans will hope that keeping Spence isn’t a foregone conclusion just yet.
