Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson has a list of suitors as long as the average child’s Christmas list. Steve Cooper, however, has suggested that he’s going nowhere.
The Reds forward took his tally for the season to four in Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing of Swansea.
Johnson hasn’t signed a new deal yet though. As a result, some fans have grown concerned at the constant rumours linking him with the Premier League.
The youngster was linked with Brentford, Leeds and Leicester during the summer and his form this season will intensify the speculation.
- WANTED MAN: Johnson wanted by Leeds
He has four assists to go with the four goals he’s scored. Last season, he found the net 13 times and registered 14 assists as Lincoln reached the play-off final in League One.
Johnson has hit the ground running in the Championship and is one of the first names on Steve Cooper’s team sheet.
The Forest head coach has delivered a pretty defiant message for the fan base regarding the future of Johnson.
He told Nottinghamshire Live: “I’m very clear about that situation (regarding Johnson). And the phone is off anyway!”
Johnson will hope to get the nod to start again when Hull City arrive at the City Ground on Saturday.
Exciting: Forest have to get Johnson tied down
The 20-year-old will have just a single year left on his contract at the end of the 2021/22 campaign. As a result, Forest must hand him a new contract to preserve his valuation.
The Reds can ill-afford to be losing homegrown talents on the cheap and Johnson has significant value.
If he continues in the team on a regular basis his stock will continue to rise and Forest have to act to get him tied down.
Cooper clearly wants to keep him around and perhaps a show of loyalty from Johnson would be to sign on the dotted line at the City Ground.
