Chris Wilder has thrown some light on the situation surrounding Djed Spence and it could be good news for Nottingham Forest.
The right-back is on loan at the City Ground and he’s playing superbly well.
His is due to spend the whole season at Forest but Wilder’s appointment at Middlesbrough has muddied the waters somewhat.
Prior to taking the job at Boro, Wilder was spotted in the stands at Forest running the rule over Spence.
That has led to much speculation regarding the player and some predictions have suggested he may be recalled.
It seems as though it might not be quite as clean-cut as that though.
Wilder was quizzed on Forest loanee Spence after Boro defeated Bournemouth at the weekend – and he’s offered Forest hope.
He told Teesside Live: “I’ve made contact with Djed and spoke to him.
“We’re talking and we’re working away. No real decision has been made on that just yet.
“It’s quite a complicated situation with Djed as well. It’s not a straightforward one.
“We have to make sure we make the right decision.”
Spence has made 17 appearances for the Reds this season and is clearly enjoying his football.
He’s expressed a desire to stay at the City Ground and Forest will hope to negotiate something when the window opens.
Hope: Forest will be buoyed by comments on Spence
Keeping hold of the right-back could help Forest make the top-six this season.
If Spence leaves the club will almost certainly require reinforcement to come in.
Mohamed Drager is yet to play for the club, whilst Jordi Osei-Tutu seems incapable of staying fit for a prolonged period.
- DEPARTURE: Player set for Forest exit
Fin Back is at the club but he is still relatively raw at this stage.
Keeping Spence would be a massive boost for Forest and it could be a decisive factor in the quest to reach the play-offs this season.
These comments should excite the fan base. With that in mind, it will be intriguing to see what the complications that Wilder talks about are.
