Nottingham Forest want to make an ambitious move to sign Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to The Sun.

The Magpies are willing to let the academy graduate leave on loan and Forest are in pole position.

Longstaff has made 12 appearances for Newcastle this season, scoring a single goal against Watford in September.

Under Eddie Howe, he’s slipped down the pecking order; playing in just two matches.

Howe will look to recruit his own players in January. That could see Longstaff banished from the first team at some point.

The 24-year-old typically operates in central midfield and is more defence-minded than anything Forest currently have.

Longstaff has risen through the academy ranks at Newcastle but at 23 he probably craves regular first-team football now.

In total, the midfielder has played 81 times for the Magpies, scoring five goals and claiming four assists.

Longstaff has also spent time on loan at Blackpool and Kilmarnock previously in his career.

Forest do have a plethora of midfield options. Ryan Yates, Jack Colback, James Garner, Braian Ojeda and Cafu are all competing for places in Steve Cooper’s team.

What have Forest fans said about potentially signing Longstaff?

It would seem as though some fans are pretty satisfied with this link.

Others are perhaps a little uncertain, with some fans believing that the squad is already well-stocked in terms of midfielders.

Longstaff is a proven Premier League player though and surely it’s one that’s worth looking at from a Forest perspective.

Garner is only on loan, Colback isn’t getting any younger and Cafu is hardly viewed as a long-term option.

Following the links to Longstaff, Forest fans have taken to Twitter to discuss whether or not the £24,000-a-week midfielder would be a decent addition.
