Nottingham Forest seem to have ruined Christmas for Hull midfielder Richard Smallwood.

His gripe is more to do with referee John Busby but it’s fair to say that the Tigers star has completely lost his head!

Forest have been denied several pretty clear penalties already this season. On Saturday, they got some luck back from the match officials.

Alex Mighten appeared to be fouled early in the second half but replays showed that it was perhaps a harsh decision on Hull.

Nonetheless, the challenge was enough to force the Forest youngster off and Lewis Grabban despatched the spot-kick.

Smallwood isn’t impressed and has thrown his toys out of the pram.

He told Hull Live: “It’s really frustrating. How the referee can say that he took him on the knees is unbelievable but that’s apparently what he’s seen.

“It’s gone now. Obviously, it’s very, very disappointing and one that I’ll never be able to get my head around.

“He’s just making it up. He couldn’t wait to give the penalty; that’s twice this season now that he’s given a big decision against Hull.

“Forest have a big fan base, they make a lot of noise and were kicking into their home end. It definitely swings again.”

Does Smallwood have a point over Forest penalty?

He does but neither Smallwood nor manager Grant McCann were quick to remember the clear foul on Ryan Yates in the first half that was overlooked for a penalty.

Forest have been on the wrong end of some shocking decisions this season and this sounds like sour grapes.

Hull were second best throughout the contest and their opening goal was most underserved.

  • STANDOUT: Manchester United youngster shines

Luckily Forest are a different animal under Steve Cooper and roared back to stun the Tigers in the second half.

The Reds were lucky to get themselves a penalty but ultimately it’s been long overdue.

Smallwood doesn’t really have a leg to stand on and he’d be wise to look at his team’s overall performance on the day.
