Nottingham Forest are eyeing a fresh move for Reading defender Tom Holmes, according to the Daily Mail. The versatile performer was linked with a City Ground move in the summer, with Forest having two bids rejected.

Holmes played for the Royals yesterday. They drew 2-2 with Derby, despite holding a two-goal advantage early in the second half.

Like the Rams, Reading’s financial situation is hardly glowing. As a result, they could be forced into a sale or two, with Holmes in the sights of several clubs.

The 21-year-old has played 15 times for Reading this season. He has played twice as a right-back and 13 times as a central defender in Vajko Paunovic’s team.

He is regarded by Forest as a player who fits the profile of Dane Murphy. The Forest CEO wanted to bring him to Nottingham in the summer, seeing two bids rejected.

The second attempt to sign Holmes saw the Reds bid £750,000 and the Royals are clearly holding out for more.

They have to be careful though. Holmes will be out of contract during the summer and can leave the Stadium for free.

Forest are facing competition from one European club for the services of Holmes. As he is entering the final six months of his deal, he would be allowed to sign pre-contract terms with an overseas club.

Ideal: Holmes could be perfect for Forest under Cooper

The Forest head coach simply loves to make changes to his team during a game. Having a player like Holmes would help him seamlessly make pro-active changes to his Reds team.

Having a defender that can play at either full-back or at the heart of his defence would be a massive help. At 21-years-old, he has a bright future and he could flourish under Cooper.

Reading won’t let Holmes go during January it would seem. It would probably take an offer in excess of what Forest are willing to pay for a player with six months remaining on his deal for them to do business.

This one has some legs though and perhaps Forest should try their best to get a deal over the line to sign Holmes in the near future.
