Celtic are set to beat Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough to the signing of Charlotte FC midfielder Riley McGree, according to the Daily Mail.
Forest had been hoping to complete a second capture from the MLS. The Reds added Canadian international Richie Laryea to their ranks last night from Toronto FC.
McGree spent the first half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Birmingham. He made 15 appearances for the club and became a hit among the club’s supporters.
The 23-year-old scored three goals for the Blues. Lee Bowyer decided to go in a different direction though and chose not to extend his loan with the club.

Now, Ange Postecoglou is set to swoop. He is a big fan of the player and is keen to take him to the Scottish Premiership outfit this month.
Celtic are competing for the title with Rangers. Steven Gerrard ended the Hoops’ dominance last season and now Giovani van Bronckhorst will be aiming to continue the Blues’ dominance.
McGree will bolster their ranks. The Hoops have been on the lookout for a new midfielder and now look set to get their man.
Ideal: Forest shouldn’t lose sleep over McGree
The six-time Australian international is clearly a good player. Frankly, Forest signing a midfielder doesn’t make a great deal of sense, however.
Ryan Yates, James Garner, Jack Colback and Braian Ojeda are all competing for a place in the Forest midfield. Cafu and Tyrese Fornah are also on the fringes of the first team.

- INTEREST: Forest want Millwall man
Signing McGree would have been odd. Although Garner is only on loan and Fornah relatively untried, Forest still have plenty of options.
It does seem as though Forest have been linked based on the fact they’ve just signed a player from the MLS.
In this instance, however, the Reds are probably better off trying to strengthen other areas of the squad before targeting another midfield player.
