Everton are preparing to stun Nottingham Forest and ask Manchester United about the availability of on-loan midfielder James Garner. According to The Sun, the Toffees want to take the 20-year-old to Goodison Park for the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

The United talent is in his second loan stint at the City Ground. He has made 21 appearances for the Reds and has started to showcase his best form under Steve Cooper.

Now, Everton are watching him closely. Rafa Benitez is working under a tight budget and he’s identified the United owned player as someone who can bolster his ranks.

The Premier League outfit were made to work for their win in the FA Cup yesterday. An Andros Townsend goal proved the distance after Everton were taken to extra time by Hull.

Garner is happy at Forest. He claimed earlier this month that he wanted to see the season out at the City Ground, after the upheaval of leaving Watford halfway through the 2020/21 campaign.

Under Cooper, he has become an integral part of the team. His performances have got better each week and losing him now would be a big blow for Forest.

Important: Forest will hope to keep Garner

The Reds will have a tough task to keep Garner beyond the end of this season. Right now though, United will be acutely aware that Forest are best for their player’s development.

Everton might not view him quite as important as Forest do and his game time could be restricted. With that in mind, the powers that be at United would be wise to keep Garner exactly where he is.

The youngster is growing at the City Ground. He is playing week in and week out for Forest and right now, that’s important to his development.

Everton might view him as an ideal signing. Next season is likely to be the one where Garner samples first-team football, however, and they may have to play a waiting game.
