Nottingham Forest linked Arsenal gem Folarin Balogun is unlikely to feature for the Gunners today. According to Football London, the striker is nearing a loan move to Middlesbrough and a deal could be completed this week.

Forest placed Balogun on their list of targets for the January window. They signed Keinan Davis from Aston Villa, however, and were likely put off by the numbers involved in any deal for Balogun.

The Arsenal starlet has been prolific for the under-23 ranks this season. As a result, the club have decided that the best thing for his development is a loan spell away from the club.

Balogun will now join Middlesbrough – and the deal is eyewatering. Boro will fork out the entire £40,000-a-week salary for a five-month loan at the Riverside Stadium.

It does perhaps seem like a calculated risk. Boro are in the top-six and they will see it as money well spent if the Arsenal youngster can help them over the line.

For Forest, it just wasn’t worth thinking about. Steve Cooper has Lewis Grabban on 10 goals this season and it seems likely that he will remain the number one striker.

Sensible: Forest wise to pull out of Balogun race

Forest have been burnt with expensive loan deals in the past. Thankfully, it would seem as though Dane Murphy is made of sterner stuff when it comes to negotiating transfers.

It’s perhaps also quite fortunate for Forest that Balogun is unlikely to be risked today. He is a threat in front of goal and he’d have needed watching carefully.

Forest will have plenty of other Arsenal players to keep a close eye on. Eddie Nketiah is a decent talisman and he could get the nod ahead of Balogun.

Some Reds fans would have fancied the youngster at Forest. Given the size of Balogun’s salary, however, it’s one race that Cooper is better off out of.
