Nottingham Forest star Djed Spence earned praise from Match of the Day pundit Stephen Warnock after the Reds shocked Arsenal.

Lewis Grabban scored the only goal of the game with seven minutes remaining. It meant that the Gunners lost to the Reds for the second time in the space of four years at the same stage of the FA Cup.

Forest were superb. After a cagey first half, it was Steve Cooper’s team who showcased their class. Arsenal rarely threatened and failed to have a shot on target during the contest.

Since the head coach arrived at the City Ground, the Reds have been a different animal. They no longer have the soft underbelly that robbed them of any consistency under Chris Hughton.

Forest have a go in every game and an important part of that is Spence. He was brilliant once again against Arsenal and Warnock was desperately impressed.

He told Match of the Day: “Djed Spence, the right wing-back. Middlesbrough fans will be wondering why he’s not playing for them. He was outstanding tonight. His ability to step onto the game, to know when to press…it was a key feature.

“He outbattled Martinelli and he surprised him. Huge performance from him.”

Quality: Spence quickly becoming main Forest man

It was music to the ears of Forest supporters last week when Chris Wilder confirmed that the 21-year-old will spend the season at the City Ground.

It was anticipated that he might be recalled. Prior to taking over at Middlesbrough, Wilder was spotted at the City Ground running the rule over Spence.

  • GEM: Youngster shines despite weekend defeat

In 19 appearances for Forest, the right-back has been nothing short of magnificent. The comparisons to former Reds star Matty Cash won’t go away, with many believing the youngster to be better.

Spence will be integral between now and the end of the season. If Forest have any chance of gatecrashing the play-offs they’ll need the right-back to continue his tremendous form.
