Nottingham Forest signed Richie Laryea from Toronto FC last week and he’s previously been compared to Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

Greg Vanney managed the MLS outfit from 2014 to 2020 and some previous comments from him should delight the Forest fan base.

Laryea has become the second permanent addition to the Reds’ ranks this summer. He follows Steve Cook into the club as Steve Cooper tries to reshape his defence.

The 27-year-old looks like an interesting signing. Toronto offered to make him the highest-paid full-back in the MLS but Laryea had his heart set on Europe.

Given the comparison made with Davies, it would seem as though Vanney believes Forest have themselves a good player in Laryea.

He previously told Waking the Reds: “He’s an incredible attacking right-back. That’s the reason you see a similar player to Alphonso Davies, who’s kind of the wide player or winger. When you have a full-back that can beat people on the dribble, that’s like gold.”

Laryea will now look to acclimatise to English football quickly. With Forest short at left-back he could find himself thrust into action in the next couple of weeks.

Quality: Laryea could be shrewd move by Forest

Although he’s an unknown quantity plenty of supporters seem happy with this deal. Toronto fans loved him and Forest fans seem keen to give him a chance to shine.

Djed Spence and Max Lowe have been Forest’s first choice full-backs this season. Both, however, are on loan and Cooper has moved quickly to make a permanent addition.

Laryea boasts pace and simply loves taking players on. If he can prove himself defensively, the club could be well set at right-back for the next few years.

The comparisons to Davies make for exciting reading. The Bayern man has won a bucket-load of silverware at Bayern and Laryea will now hope to emulate his compatriot.
