Sheffield Wednesday have nipped ahead of Nottingham Forest in the race to sign Brighton defender Haydon Roberts this month, according to the Brighton and Hove Independent.
The Owls are keen to bolster their ranks this month. Darren Moore’s men have slipped out of contention for a play-off place in recent weeks and they’re desperate for a push during the second half of the season.
Roberts spent last season in League One with Rochdale. It was anticipated that he’d go out on loan in the summer, but Brighton chose to keep him around.
The 19-year-old has made three Carabao Cup appearances this season but Graham Potter is now willing to loan him out.
Forest were thought to be interested. Swansea and Cardiff were also in the mix to land the centre-back during the January transfer window.
Now, Wednesday have moved into pole position. Moore is keen to strengthen his ranks this month with a centre-back at the top of his shortlist.
Interest from Forest has probably wavered on the back of Steve Cook signing. Head coach Steve Cooper was keen to add a defender on a permanent basis and has already got his man over the line.
Future: Roberts will likely remain on Forest radar
As a talented youngster, the relevant recruitment people at Forest will clearly be aware. For now, however, the Reds are well-stocked at centre-back.
Cook has joined Scott McKenna and Joe Worrall in the defensive ranks that already included Tobias Figueiredo and Loic Mbe Soh.

Perhaps another League One loan will be useful for his development. The Owls are desperately short of centre-backs and he’ll certainly play lots of football there.
The summer could see Forest in the market for a central defender. Perhaps then will be the time for the Reds to make Roberts one of their top targets.
