Nottingham Forest defender Carl Jenkinson joined Melbourne City on loan this week. Today, he capped off a stunning debut by scoring his first goal for his new club.

The right-back hasn’t made the first-team squad during 2021/22. He is out of contract in the summer and looks to have played his last game for Forest.

Now, he’s embarking on a new journey in Australia. He’s started life really well at Melbourne and helped his new club to a 3-1 win earlier today.

Jenkinson, 29, signed for Forest in 2019. He made just 15 appearances for the club, registering one assist during his time on Trentside.

Injuries and inconsistency have robbed him of a chance to impress. Last season when called upon he was largely ineffective and his last game came in a 5-1 drubbing by Swansea.

Jenkinson has fallen behind Djed Spence and youngster Fin Back in the pecking order this season. A move, therefore, looked like the best situation for all parties.

The former Arsenal man arrived on a permanent deal in 2019. He was viewed as a decent addition but ultimately he’s failed to make the grade at the City Ground.

What have fans said about Jenkinson?

The defender spent ten years at Arsenal and their fans seem to worship him. Forest fans on the other hand haven’t found him quite so useful in their team.

Jenkinson simply needs to play games and he won’t do that at Forest. He’s unlikely to get himself a new deal at the City Ground either so offloading him now makes sense.

It’s sad that Jenkinson hasn’t been able to make an impact on Trentside. Frankly, given how poor he’s been for the Reds, Forest fans can’t believe what he did this morning. Arsenal fans have been impressed with him too.

Here is what both sets of fans had to say on Twitter after Jenkinson’s first Melbourne City goal.
