Ateef Konate made his first Championship appearance for Nottingham Forest last night. The under-23 whizz stepped off the bench with nine minutes remaining to replace Brennan Johnson. After the game, the new kid on the block received praise from Andy Reid.

The Frenchman was a surprise inclusion in Steve Cooper’s squad. With Lyle Taylor heading out on loan imminently, Forest were short of a body to take a place in the latest matchday squad. Enter Konate…

The 20-year-old has been a mainstay in Reid’s under-23 outfit. He’s made 13 appearances for the young guns, scoring twice and claiming three assists, with his latest goal against Fulham a thing of real beauty.

The game was won when Johnson scored his seventh goal of the season in the second half. His strike followed goals from Keinan Davis and Ryan Yates and secured a third successive league win for the Reds.

It also prompted Cooper to throw Konate into the fray. The youngster looked largely lively during his time on the pitch and certainly wasn’t afraid to get involved with the play.

His first touch was a delicious ball heel volley that fell perfectly to Philip Zinckernagel. It offered a large sign that the youngster signed from Le Havre isn’t lacking in confidence when it comes to the big stage.

What has Reid said to burgeoning Forest talent Konate?

The former Forest winger is exceptionally proud of the work Konate has produced. He’s performed tirelessly for the under-23s and thoroughly deserved a shot in last night’s game.

Even the player himself might have been surprised to get on the pitch. With the game over and Barnsley tiring, however, it seemed like a good time to blood the talent.

Reid took to Twitter after the game. He was naturally pleased and also had time to send a bit of advice to the youngster ahead of his future challenges.
