Nottingham Forest midfielder James Garner has been a man on a mission over the last few months. He has grown under Steve Cooper and after a slow start to his second City Ground spell, the Manchester United man has been magnificent.

Garner checked in during the summer transfer window. The Reds were delighted to complete the signing of the Red Devils gem for a second time after he starred during last season.

The 20-year-old scored four goals in 20 games during the second half of 2020/21. His forward-thinking approach helped Chris Hughton’s team pull clear of the relegation zone and secure their Championship status.

Forest beat off a clutch of clubs to sign him. Rangers and Premier League outfit Norwich were both keen but United and Garner were both keen for him to return to the City Ground.

Some statistics have emerged regarding Garner that highlights his quality. The figures that have come courtesy of Who Scored will have Manchester United fans eagerly anticipating him arriving back at Old Trafford.

They claim that no player under the age of 21 has registered more key passes in this season’s Championship. Garner has registered 40 from 24 appearances, with Brennan Johnson second on that list, registering 36 from 29 outings.

Quality: Garner can help Forest claim play-off place

The 20-year-old is in fine form. He simply oozes class and on Sunday he dominated a midfield boasting regular Premier League players along with Ryan Yates.

Garner glides around the pitch and his passing radar really is a joy to behold. He’s comfortable laying the ball 10 yards or knocking one 50 yards in behind a full-back.

Forest do have a number of midfield options. There isn’t really anyone quite like Garner in Cooper’s ranks, however and his fitness could prove integral.

If he can stay in this sort of form then Forest have as much chance of reaching the play-offs as any time currently vying for a top-six place.

For United fans, they must be buzzing for next season. The club has a rich history of producing quality young players and Garner could be the next off the conveyor belt.

With Paul Pogba likely to leave along with Nemanja Matic, Garner could be the next cab off the ranks for a shot at holding down a place in the United midfield.
