Nottingham Forest allowed midfielder Samba Sow to leave during the summer. His City Ground contract expired after two years and he was sent on his way with his contract not extended.

It took some time but Sow did eventually find himself a new club. He saw his career go full circle, signing for Lens where the combative performer started his career.

It’s proved an unsuccessful second stint with the club where it all began. He is yet to make a single appearance in Ligue 1 and has made just five appearances for the second string.

During his time with the development ranks, he’s captained the side in three games. Clearly, the club feels that his leadership qualities can offer something to the young lads coming through the ranks.

His last name didn’t end well though. He was sent off prior to half-time during a 1-1 draw against Saint-Quentin.

Lens are enjoying a pretty decent campaign in the French top-flight. That has perhaps contributed to Sow not getting any opportunities since signing following his Forest departure.

He became something of a cult hero at Forest for his robust style. Sow made 42 appearances for the Reds across two seasons and proved integral under Sabri Lamouchi.

Fan favourite: Forest were right to offload Sow

It would have proved a difficult decision for Forest when it came to Sow. He was absolutely brilliant when called upon but ultimately he couldn’t stay fit.

It would have been bizarre to hand a 32-year-old a new contract given his less than impressive injury record.

Sow worked brilliantly in tandem alongside Ben Watson during the 2019/20 campaign but it would have just been too much of a risk for Forest.

Given that he’s struggled to get in the Lens squad perhaps the decision which upset some supporters have now been justified by the club.
