Nottingham Forest tried desperately to sign midfielder Ben Whiteman during the January transfer window of 2021. On Tuesday night, they will come up against the player when Preston North End are the hosts.
Chris Hughton was desperate to sign a progressive ball-playing midfielder over a year ago. In the end, Forest missed out and landed James Garner and Filip Krovinovic on loan instead.
Whiteman has kicked on during the 2021/22 campaign. Under Ryan Lowe, he has been in fine form and he’s currently sat on four goals and six assists for the season.
Forest will seriously hope that Whiteman doesn’t return to haunt the Reds. They were among a clutch of clubs who wanted the Doncaster man before Preston stuck their money where their mouth is.
Whiteman is only 25-years-old and he would have represented a superb investment for the future. He really shone at Doncaster and helped them reach the League One play-offs.
Whiteman plays the box-to-box role with aplomb. He loves to progress the ball forwards, whilst he’s not averse to getting his foot stuck in as well.
The midfielder had lots of interested parties for his signature. The Lilywhites won the race though and they’ve got themselves a seriously talented player.
Forest could rue not signing Whiteman
When Forest played Preston at home in October, Whiteman was guilty of giving the Reds a penalty as he fouled Brennan Johnson.
He has been largely impressive though for Preston and in the summer, Forest will likely go in search of another midfielder.
Garner will head back to Manchester United, whilst Cafu could be offloaded. Braian Ojeda, Ryan Yates and Jack Colback will therefore compete for places in the team.
Another option is likely to be sought and Whiteman would have been ideal during the January 2021 window.
The maestro looks likely to play in the Premier League during his career and Forest could regret not trying harder to sign him when they had the chance.
