Nottingham Forest take on Preston North End tomorrow night and perhaps it’s the perfect chance to hand Sam Surridge his first start.

The 23-year-old checked in from Stoke City on transfer deadline day last month. Since arriving he’s made three substitute appearances, with Keinan Davis preferred in attack.

Surridge proved a signing that came pretty much out of the blue. An injury to Lewis Grabban saw Forest rethink their plans for deadline day and move for a striker.

That man was the striker who has struggled to make an impact since joining Stoke from Bournemouth in the summer.

He had found first-team football hard to come by at the Bet365 Stadium and jumped at the chance to reunite with Steve Cooper.

The Forest head coach had Surridge during his time at Swansea and the talisman raved about Cooper when he arrived at the City Ground.

Tomorrow could be the ideal time to unleash Surridge as he has a history of scoring against Preston.

Last season Bournemouth fell to a 3-2 defeat against the Lilywhites at the Vitality Stadium and the striker helped himself to a goal.

Strikers don’t forget things like that and he will be fully aware of what he has been capable of against North End in the past.

Surridge nearing closer to first Forest start

It does seem unlikely that Keinan Davis will be dropped for tomorrow. During Forest’s last away trip, he proved a constant menace to Blackburn and that won’t have gone unnoticed.

Cooper could opt to start Surridge as well as the on-loan Aston Villa man, however, with Davis featuring from the left previously.

There will come a time when the newcomer earns a start and with the games set to come thick and fast that could be sooner rather than later.

Surridge scored against Preston last season and he will hope for similar fortunes if he gets the nod for Forest tomorrow.
