Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna has been explaining to The Athletic what he absolutely loves about playing for the club right now.

The Scotland international has been a revelation for the Reds since signing in the summer of 2020, playing every game of the current campaign.

McKenna brings balance to the Forest defence. His left-sided capabilities level the Reds up at the back and he’s perfect for Steve Cooper’s style of play.

Forest landed McKenna from Aberdeen. There he gained plenty of first-team experience and he’s taken to English football really well.

The 25-year-old has struck up a nice relationship with Joe Worrall and Steve Cook, with the trio working wonders as a three-man defensive unit.

After Saturday’s 2-0 win over Bristol City, McKenna was quizzed on what playing for Forest has been like under Cooper.

He told The Athletic: “We like to play, we like to pass the ball and be strong in possession – but most of all we like to defend. We enjoy the ugly side of the game.

“It has been enjoyable playing a few matches in a row as a back three. It becomes seamless over time. I have played a lot of games with Joe now – and having Steve’s experience helps massively. He brings a calmness and a level of confidence.”

Future is bright for Forest and McKenna

A lot of the talk has been about Worrall making the step up to Premier League football. It seems almost nailed on, however, that McKenna is destined for the top-flight too.

Some eyebrows were raised when Forest parted with £3 million for the centre-back. He’s been worth every single penny though and the Reds landed themselves a coup.

Each of Forest’s three first-choice centre backs have been brilliant of late. McKenna, however, does seem to be the one that supporters simply love to rave about.

It will delight supporters to know that he appears happy at Forest and long may his strong form continue.
