Manchester United technical director Darren Fletcher has dropped a James Garner hint that might leave Nottingham Forest fans gutted.
The youngster is on loan for a second spell at the City Ground after impressing during the second half of 2020/21.
Garner is playing out of his skin at the moment and it would appear that hasn’t gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.
United are facing yet another transitional period. Ralf Rangnick will be replaced as manager in the summer and the reset button will be pushed once again.
It seems as though more emphasis is set to be placed on youth at United.
For years, some of the club’s youngsters have been neglected and sent on loan at the expense of signing expensive flops.
Now, Garner could be in luck and Fletcher has elaborated, namechecking Garner in an interview with the Manchester Evening News.
He said: “Probably the key part of the role is taking a holistic view of the path for players from our academy to our first-team.
“I’m looking at how we best use the loan system to give academy players invaluable experience at other clubs.
“Hopefully, we’ll see players like Brandon Williams, Teden Mengi, Jimmy Garner, Ethan Laird, Tahith Chong and Amad Diallo reap the benefits next season.”
It was always a long shot but Forest will hate this news about Garner
Given that he’s only 20 and at a massive club like Manchester United, some supporters might have fancied Garner back for a third spell.
That does seem unlikely now. Garner is thoroughly deserving of a shot at the Premier League after his Forest heroics.
It’s taken the youngster some time to get up to speed this time around but in the last two months, he’s been excellent.
Garner will be sent on his way with Forest supporters’ best wishes.
That won’t stop the fan base feeling somewhat gutted to see him go at the end of the campaign.
