Nottingham Forest midfield Ryan Yates has told The Athletic that Djed Spence is close to Matty Cash in terms of quality.
Spence has been a revelation for the Reds during 2021/22 having arrived on loan from Middlesbrough during the summer.
He has made 28 appearances for the Reds and has warmed the hearts of supporters like no other loan player has.
Spence has struck up a brilliant partnership with Brennan Johnson on the right-hand side and supporters don’t want him to go.
The last time Forest fans were this infatuated with a right-back was when Sabri Lamouchi deployed Cash as one during 2019/20.
He spent one season strutting his stuff in the Forest team before earning a £16 million move to Aston Villa.
Yates thinks the two players are similar and claims Spence is right up there with Cash when it comes to quality right-backs.
He told The Athletic: “Djed is such an intelligent footballer. I know he can look quite relaxed out on the pitch. But he does think about the game a lot and tactically he is very good. He’s an intelligent lad. There is a lot more to him. In terms of quality, he’s right up there with Matty (Cash).”
Stardom: Spence is set for the top after Forest loan
The right-back has been truly wonderful in the Forest team and several top clubs are interested in his services.
Bayern Munich have now joined the race to sign the defender. Arsenal, Tottenham and Dortmund are all thought to be keen too.
- WORRY: Manager makes claim that Forest fans migth not like
Given that he’s only 21-years-old, it’s pretty scary just how far Spence can go in the game and the boy looks destined for greatness.
Yates is right to suggest he’s up there with Cash but in terms of performances just for Forest, it has to be said that Spence is probably better.
The Reds have been fortunate to have the youngster and it’ll be fascinating to see where he ends up.
